The most deadly ant in the world

Ouch! What on earth is that insect?! Well, that is a Siafu ant. Also known as driver ant, Dorylus, and the African red ant. This may be surprisingly to hear it’s an ant, as it doesn’t quite fit the typical idea of what we think an ant looks like.

The Siafu ant is definitely not one you would want to accidentally come upon. We all know about fire ants, but the Siafu ant is even worse than a fire ant! They are found primarily in Central and West Africa. The driver ant is known to travel in large packs. They have larger colonies than any other ant colony in the world, ranging all the way up to approximately 22 million ants per colony! The Dorylus ant is also one of the largest ants in the world, growing anywhere from 1/8 of an inch all the way up to 2 inches long.

Another interesting fact is that these ants are carnivores! They will feast on any animal that they come across, and that animal better catch on quick, otherwise a colony of the Siafu ant will devour them quickly. They are incredibly aggressive and will attack if they feel even one member of the colony is threatened. As you can see in this video, they have huge mandibles with a strangely tight grasp. Oddly enough, there have been reports of them killing humans. So be warned, if you see a group of these guys in your path, run, run as fast as you can!
