Dolphins love to show off. By flipping out of the water and performing aquatic acrobatics, they have captured the hearts of humans everywhere. Unfortunately, showing off can sometimes get you into trouble. Especially when everyone is doing it.
Dolphins have had a special spot in their hearts for us humans, for a very long time. They seem to see something in us that needs nurtured and they often try to take care of us as if we are one of them. When they’re around humans a lot, they tend to show up more frequently for our attention.
This looks like a tour of some sort, so these dolphins are probably used to putting on a show like this. It might seem like this collision was an unintended accident, but I’m not completely convinced that’s what really happened.
Dolphins will jump out of the water like this to travel faster. It takes less time and energy to fly through the air a bit, then it does to swim the whole way. They’ll also do this to look for food or watch out for predators. But perhaps their favorite reason, is because they love to play and show off for one another; or for their human friends.
Sometimes their jumps are simple and sometimes they can be a little more extravagant. They like to do synchronized routines and it’s said that they will communicate before, during and after this routine. This way they are all working together to achieve the best show possible.
Sometimes they will rudely bump into or charge each other. Hmm, could that be what happened in this video? They’ll generally do this during mating times to warn off competing dolphins.
I’m thinking this guy was trying to impress a girl but this other dolphin held her eye, so he retaliated. I’m sure that caught her attention. Either that, or maybe he was just tired of this dolphin always hogging the spotlight. Whatever his reasons were, he sure did give these folks a show they’ll never forget.
